Time for a new video card!

Not sure WTF is going on here, but I can't even get BF3 to start up, and Tomb Raider is getting (according ot the benchmark) about 20 FPS.

I could actually run BF3 with the 4870's, and I'm fairly certain that TR would have at least been 30-35 FPS there ...

BF3 remains unplayable - everything set to low I can get about 10-15 FPS. I think it might just be something with BF3 that's a problem ... because Titanfall, which is FAR more demanding, just screams along at 1080p with everything maxed out. Glad I got the 4GB card, because Titanfall is taking up 3.5+ GB of VRAM!

but i suggest removing all video card drivers, and install fresh as first step before anything else.

Tried that, and I also tried removing all the drivers and starting over. I got BF3 as part of the Humble Bundle a while back, so it's not like I'm really into it for real money. Not going to sweat it.


But Jesus, Titanfall. I really wish it was someone other than Infinity Ward behind it.

I always have had problems with the catalyst drivers back when AMD was ATI. Switched over to Nvidia and never had a problem especially with Linux stuff. I play around with Revit and 3Dsmax and everything seems to work well. I don't know how well the non professional cards are at accuracy when using autocad or inventor. I'm on a student license.

The professional cards are a complete and utter waste of money when it comes to Inventor. A solid gaming card is the way to go there, since Inventor has used Direct3D for years. Pretty sure Max and Maya are in the same boat as well. Not sure about Revit. Pretty sure that AutoCAD still uses OpenGL, so a Quadro / FireGL card will still show benefits there.

The last time that I had an ATI / AMD issue with Inventor was ... I think it was with Inventor 2009, when they didn't support Crossfire. From 2010 on it's been fine, but now I have a single card, so it's no big deal.

Good to know about the professional video cards. Those things are expensive though I assume businesses don't have the same hardware turnover as a gamer would. If I had that kind of scratch I'd buy a Tesla card.

My workstation at the office was a ridiculously overpriced pile of ... I guess not quite crap, but it's a Dell so YMMV. It's a Xeon E3-1280, which is just an i7-2600 without the IGP. It's got a Quadro 600, which is a GT430 with better OpenGL performance that goes completely to waste for me, since I use absolutely zero OpenGL software. It maxes out at 16GB, but requires ECC RAM. Aaaaaaand ... it cost the company almost $4000.

My computer at home is tremendously more powerful, and I've got about 1/4th the money into it.
