looks like Nintendo is dead set and forcing the Wii U onto consumers.........even though sales for the system are weak and everyone agrees the launch was handled poorly Nintendo is staying the course and now is killing online services for the Wii and DS. multiplayer and leader boards will not function after May 20th. other apps like Netflix and web browser will remain functional though.

Umm. What?
up up down down left right left right B A SELECT START. Besides, that's Konami, not Nintendo.
As far as the wii and ds online services thing, shouldn't be much of a shock. The 3ds has been out a while now(not to mention its variants), there never was really much in the way of popularity for the online services(mostly due to the piss poor way Nintendo set it up) other than grabbing games from the shop. With the wii, I suspect nintendo was seeing the same thing. If the number of concurrent users plummets, at some point it's simply not feasible to keep the servers running foreverComment

Important distinction. DS is not the 3DS. They will continue to support online 3DS games.looks like Nintendo is dead set and forcing the Wii U onto consumers.........even though sales for the system are weak and everyone agrees the launch was handled poorly Nintendo is staying the course and now is killing online services for the Wii and DS. multiplayer and leader boards will not function after May 20th. other apps like Netflix and web browser will remain functional though.

The wii was awesome fun (especially after a couple beers)
Mine recently died so the gf went out and bought a wii U. What a stinking piece of **** this is. They literally took everything that was good on the wii and did the opposite.Artist formally known as CEO of Tracy Rifle and PistolComment

Way back we bought a Wii and after a few weeks it pretty much sat unused. The only thing that was even of interest now is the new bowling game which isn't bad and a dart game that's pretty good. Other then that its pretty much never used.
Kind of sad really as they just seemed to lose their edge.NRA Life Member

You both must mean the Wii U as the Wii itself was a raging success for N.

Your ups and downs weren't in the right order either, and it started with Gradius, not Contra. Still Konami and not Nintendo since it's on more than just Nintendo systems
Anyway...
The Wii sold exceptionally well, but that's no indication of how the online services for it were doing. I know plenty of people that bought a wii, and most of them have left it collecting dust in a closet for quite a while now. I don't know if the wii used the same moronic friend code system that the DS did, but if the entire online functionality was even similar to the DSi(and even on the 3ds now it's pretty crap), that would have put it behind sony in terms of usability of the online service by a mile and wouldn't shock me in the least that Nintendo decided to abandon it relatively early after the launch of the wii-u.
