How can I record from my cable box without renting a recorder from cox?

How can I record from my cable box without renting a recorder from cox?

The output cable from the cox box to my tv is hdmi.

I'd like to buy a recorder to put between the cable box and the TV so I can record the English premier league games that start at dark friggin thirty.

    Anyone doing this?

Hauppauge or Tivo. that said most cable HDMI is encrypted - trick is to use component connections & you will work around without loss of quality.

Use component. COX uses Motorola Boxes IIRC .. they will output on both HDMI and Component at the same time. Use some sort of DVR device to record your shows.. thing is.. you'd have to be home to change the channel.

I use a Hauppauge hdpvr with component cables and MythTV with my linux box. It isn't for the faint of heart. I would suggest getting a tivo if you aren't tech savvy in the linux side of things.

As others mention component cables is to get around the encryption. There are devices people purchase like hdfury to get around things as well.

Most of what he said, I'm using the Hauppauge HD PVR 2 (model 1512) on it's component connectors. I picked this because of the included component cable and optical audio input (Hauppauge product comparison), I wanted to record programs stored on the DVR but had heard that HDMI off a cable box was encrypted (think this is true - HDMI cable into PVR and from there to TV does not work).

The cable top box I have a SA 8240 HDC and Cox is the provider. I will note that while I have not screwed around with the PVR as much as I would like the SA DVR does not support output on both component and HDMI at the same time, and in fact you have to change a setting on the SA DVR to get the component outputs active. It makes recording a minor PITA, but it works for getting HD content off the provider box.

This post is dual purpose, to aid the OP and I wish I had found a post similar to this as it would have saved me much research and moving crap around trying to get mine working.
