Not sure if you tried but I've found Western Digital's external drive USB controllers to be crap. The drives are usually fine if you pull them out and format them.

Doesn't help much if the only connector on the HDD board is a USB 3.0, soldered.

Hey have you run into any problems with the WD reds? I haven't used them personally or professionally yet so I'm curious.

I've had a 1TB Red (WDC WD10EFRX-68JCSN0) for a year and a half, because my Deskstar (Hitachi HDS721010CLA332) started developing errors (which I had for 2 years, prior). Not a hiccup, so far.

Using Opensuse Linux 13.1 for legal research and editing of manuscripts.

I've had both WD and Seagate. Out of the 10(ish) hard drives I've bought in the last 15 years I've had one WD fail in my laptop. You can but either with confidence imo.
