    Cable/TV/DVD hookup

Cheap system I know but how do I get this all working correctly and what and where should the cables go?
My old Entertainment System's DVD player went out. I have this cheap DVD player and it does have the surround speaker setup. I'd like to use it until I get to a full Blue Ray system. I know I won't get full HD or anything, The Cable box isn't HD.
    I want:
TV stations and Movies through the surround system on the DVD player.

Can't tell from the pic of the audio sys if the composite terminals (red/white/yellow) are inputs or outputs. If they are inputs, you can plug the matching composite terminals from you dvd player into them. With the limited inputs/outputs you have I would hook up the red/white cables to the stereo and the matching yellow cable directly to the TV. I would do the same with the cable box that way all the sound will come from the stereo. If you dont have enoufg inputs/outputs available, you might have to plug 1 into the TV directly. Hope that helps.

What speakers are you trying to use?

Unless your dvd player is an integrated player/receiver (doesnt appear to be, though), you will not get TV audio out of the dvd player. It looks like the dvd player supports small speakers (far left connections in your pic).

I see Midol in your future. No worries, a common occurrence with people on this board.

I can see a few ways of hooking this up with many different types of cables. HDMI is only going to get from the DVD to the TV. This leaves the cable box. Do I leave the coaxial from it to the TV? Do I use the Tri colored Cable?

NikePenguin- I see your point there. The old DVD Player had a built in Receiver and surround. Worked well, but the DVD player isn't working. This player had coaxial in from the cable box, then out to the TV. Everything went through the DVD system, so much easier to hookup.

Are you getting picture and sound from the cable box on your TV now? If so, you could leave that connection alone and just go with HDMI for the dvd player.

Is the "tricolored cable" blue/green/red? That is component video (no audio) and is HD capable. You would need to connect the red/white audio or the optical audio.

Yes the entire system works well now, yet the receiver's DVD is out.
I can video through the existing Rec, by using the aux in from the new DVD Yellow), yet no sound from the R/W.
I can probably use the HDMI from the new DVD to the TV, but I can't see how to get sound out of the Surround while watching reg TV.
Maybe just get a better setup?

By reg TV, do you mean cable? Try the audio out (red/white) to audio in (red/white) on the receiver.

Sorry, but it's very hard to say without seeing it in person.

I don't think you are going to be able to do what you want to do because your replacement DVD player only has outputs. So you can't hook anything else into it.

If your old surround system has an available input, you can plug your new DVD player into that, and leave everything else the same, and watch movies that way.

Otherwise, it may just be time for you to go out and spend a bit of money on an all in one home theater set up by onkyo or Yamaha ( with hdmi pass through and switching) and hook all your devices into that and then that to the hdmi port on your TV.

Hdmi from VCR to TV hdmi1. TV must be on hdmi 1 to watch VCR
Could not tell if cable box has HDMI
If not. Cable box bottom yellow red white to Tv video input 1 yellow red white
To watch cable box tv must be on video input 1
There should be an input button on remote for TV to go from video 1 to hdmi1
