The routers the ISPs give or rent out run the gamut of crap to good. If you feel the one you got isn't working the way you like just do some research and get a new one.

The router I got with my AT&T DSL service was a piece of crap. 2Wire if I recall. Very little available in configuring options. I picked up a different one and sold the 2Wire on Ebay (this was several years ago). The 2Wire I received I had to pay for anyway but I got a discount for the setup or whatever so I actually made a little extra on it which helped defray the cost of the new router.

Soon I will be getting Comcast (FINALLY) and I fully expect to have something behind it. Likely I will use the router they give me but disable the WIFI and instead hook up a Netscreen I have behind it and then a wireless access point.

If their router sucks then I'll just buy a better one.

I probably wouldn't use the router they give you unless it is a smoking deal. I find with the routers built in with the cable modems you can't control the firmware and are stuck at their leisure if there is a problem.
