After reading one thread on ham radios http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...d.php?t=868043
it occurs to me lots of other people want to add communications to their SHTF bag and be up on what to get in emergency communications, I was suprised how affordable HAM is right now, what would you reccommend in communications, HAM, CB etc.?

When dealing with radio communication first you have a couple of questions.
    1. How far do you want to transmit or communicate with.
    2. What kind of power supply or requirements do I need.
    3. How much money do I want to spend.

The small Hand Helds like the Baofung are good line of sight radios they cover VHF and UHF freqs. They are cheap and very little training and experience is needed to use. Can run on AA batteries. And you only need a Tech ham license to operate.

Now if you want to stay with VHF and UHF but want more power. You will need to move up to a mobile or base station. This means bigger antenna. Back up power supply. A little more knowledge on setting up antennas and station. You still only need you Tech license to operate.

Now if you want to go farther to a different state or country. You will be limited with your Tech license and need to move up to General. You will need more experience and knowledge, and more money.
