They run a full X GUI and my daughter loves to dink with Scratch on hers. I was kinda obsessing with them before I got this gun addiction.

They run MPD as well and there are plenty of clients including ones for smart phones. Makes for a cool way for you or anyone to remotely control your music collection in your house. We set up an unlocked Nook tablet to run it set up like a jukebox so folks can load up the queue with a song they want to hear. Cool for gatherings.

They can drive a media center as well (composit and HDMI out), but I haven't dinked with that.

i like to use them for "large people gatherings' signage bots" - but they are very useful especially if you get the one with both usb and hdmi ports

if your pops is asking for one - $5 says he knows how to use it like he did your mom (you were born, weren't you?) (aka: make sweet sweet love with it)

My team discussed the Pi the other week. Basically, the question was, "What happened to Pi?", as in it was all the rage for a month and then it faded.

My opinion: It's like "legos" for adults. Something just to play around with to see what you can build. I can't imagine you would do anything 'production' worthy with a Pi. You hear about people serving out a couple webpages off of one with a stripped down httpd, but what's the point?

The one idea was to build an automatic pentesting tool with a Pi that you can just plug into a network and let it crawl away, which actually had some worthwhile purpose for practical work.
