OK, being a somewhat IT veteran when I get a problem it's usually pretty fun (sarcasm font implied).
So my system is a Dell Alienware X51, not that I'm a gamer but Dell had a good deal on it as it was nearing it's end of model life, so I grabbed it and it's been happily chugging along for 18+ months. It has an AMD Radeon 6970 crossfire connected to a 26 inch monitor as the primary and a 22 inch as a secondary.
Was playing around with the bitcoin apps earlier in the week (wallet & miner(guiminer)) and noticed that it made a difference for guiminer if you had OpenCL support, so in violation of primary rule of life "if it ain't broke don't fix it" I installed AMD control center and drivers.
Second monitor was not available to extend desktop after reboot.
So after installing and uninstalling a couple of times, here's what happens.
When I uninstall the control center and drivers about 10 seconds into the progress bar the second display comes on and behaves normally until the recommended reboot occurs - then no second monitor available.
When installing the control center and drivers about 30 seconds into the install the second monitor comes on and is fine until the recommended reboot - then no second monitor available.
So much as my google-fu is normally above average I'm not finding anything closely matching what I'm seeing, or actually much that isn't relating to DVI & VGA adapters as the issue.
So here I sit looking at dual monitors, all correctly laid out and working - pretty sure that after a reboot I will only have the left monitor again. Just figured it was worth a post in the tech forum before I start thinking of rebuilding the system...
