will NON-ECC ram working in a Server....

will NON ecc ram work in a server that comes with ECC? can you mix and match just as long as your using the same specs minus the ECC?
    thanks!!!!!

I have seen some boards that have the ability to turn ECC-checking off, but I haven't seen any recently, but I haven't had much dealings with server boards in the last few years.

If the board has the option in the BIOS, I would guess so, assuming the pins match (if they fit in the memory-slot with the same key, and you can turn it off it SHOULD work), but like I said, it's been a while since I have dealt with any ECC/server tinkering.

Most servers lack the ability to turn off ECC. There is a reason for that. Don't use non-ECC (even in a server that can turn off such requirements) that does anything critical.

It's just a bad idea. Don't cheap out after shelling out the big bucks for a real server in a server chassis.

Unless it is some white-box POS then do as you please and may the results be on thy head if it is in a mission critical application.
...but their exists also in the human heart a depraved taste for equality, which impels the weak to attempt to lower the powerful to their own level, and reduces men to prefer equality in slavery to inequality with freedom.

X1000. Don't be a cheapskate with a mission critical server. If it's just for tinkering, go ahead and mix if your board will allow you to turn off the ECC.

I have ran motherboards that accept both ECC and non ECC… some that require ECC, and some that can’t take advantage of ECC.

Just do research on the main board in the server and the processor that is being used…In modern system I suspect it is on both the CPU and the Mainboard. Can’t remember details on the Intel architecture but I think the memory controllers are built into the processor, so an example: non Xeon processors don’t support ECC ram even if the processor is being used on a server board which supports ECC and so on...

Just curious… what are you trying to use it for?

A "Workstation" ( a real one) is an advanced desktop unit for advanced needs (3d modeling, scientific work, HEAVY high def video work). They usually do not work well for gaming needs.

They are basically server/desktops, they often have server motherboards.

If you are doing scientific work I'd stick with the ECC. Again they come with ECC for a reason.

This is the "*****" workstation. The HPZ820, I used to have an older version running on the scalable AMD Chips.
