Tried to install Pear Linux 7 on the laptop last night and I guess it's not compatible. It said I had a 686 chip and I needed a x86-64 chip. I downloaded the 64 bit version, I couldn't find a 32 bit version (not sure if there is one anyway).

Tried Linux Mint and it said I was missing some kernels that were needed to install on the laptop.

The laptop I'm trying to get Linux installed on is a Dell Latitude D400 with NO CD/DVD Drive, so I've been using UNetbootin to create a USB installer.

Hi Ricky. If you have a bit torrent client, you can download PearOS 6 which will run on your system. Then you can create an installed with Unetbootin. Good luck

They said the x86 (32 bit) would be out soon after the betas for x86_64 came out. I have installed 6 on old notebooks, and it worked well.

Downloading Pear OS 6 right now. I'll let you know what happens. Thanks for the help.

WOW BT5R3 is already out? I have been busy with other crap, as my latest Disc is 5.

The best try-before-you-buy (AKA Live CD/DVD) might be Knoppix, as I have had issues with less-recent Backtrack distros not being able to install, just like Slax.
BT5R3 is old. They no longer develop the product.

All their efforts have gone into Kali Linux.

BT5R3 virtualized works just fine for me, use it for wireless pen testing through USB passthrough on my laptop. Once I get my 4 way handshakes offload the hashing to my desktop's CUDA cores on Pyrit.

Downloaded Pear OS 6 -x86 version and got it on the USB drive thru unetbootin, ran the install and got this error.

This kernel requires the following features not present on the CPU:
              pae
Unable to boot - please use a kernel appropriate for your CPU.

I'll have to do more research tomorrow. Time for bed and get at least a few hours of sleep before I have to get up at 6am.

Well, PAE = Physical Address Extensions, and that's a CPU feature that allows a 32-bit CPU to access beyond 4GB of RAM. From what I know, all the major distros have a default kernel that expects a PAE capable CPU. You can try installing an older distribution of Pear and then upgrade the kernel and the distribution using it's package manager, or find a different distribution that can install a kernel that doesn't require PAE.

If you have not pae, you can try

                  debian 6 i386

CrunchBang is a Debian GNU/Linux based distribution offering a great blend of speed, style and substance. Using the nimble Openbox window manager, it is highly customisable and provides a modern, full-featured GNU/Linux system without sacrificing performance.

also some older versions of linux, but most new ones do not have since they took out support for it in the kerner since those processors are just too old

Ubuntu: it's too bleeding edge to be considered stable and stable is easy. If you get Debian 7 you will be better off in the long run and it's what ubuntu is based off of. You don't have to learn the command line these days but I love the bash shell and apt. Debian runs on all 5 of my servers and a desktop.

You can use any window manager or desktop environment you want such as kde, gnome, ldxe, fluxbox, xfce, and more.

Debian or ubuntu will both have easy to understand how-tos online if you come across any problems.

You better know how to use CLI and *nix, especially if you run servers. 99% of servers aren't going to be running any sort of video. Even if you have some sort of video console (e.g. VMWare/VSphere), why you would light up a window manager on a Linux server to admin the box is baffling.
