    emt...

Glad you got the disc and got Ubuntu loaded! What is the make and model of your printer? I had warned you that the printer may/may not work with Linux. Glad to help out a fellow CGN'er!

To see if you have Vista service pack, just right click on My Computer (Computer) and select properties. It will tell you there what SP you have...

Ok I'm sorta flailing around slowly getting, sorted out.

Can't figure out how to pull pix off sd cards, I pop them In and it won't read them?
Pop them in the vista machine and bang the .jpg files from the camera are there and available.
The Linux just sort of hangs there.
Still haven't figured out a way to program my ham radio either.

          I'm 50/50 still.

          No pop ups though lol

            Mark:

            Originally I believe you stated:

Ubuntu will serve that purpose just fine... However you are doing much more.

I assume you are trying to use the lappys internal card reader? You might not find a Linux driver for that... Does Ubuntu see the card reader? If not, you need drivers.

That's much more than you stated in post #1... give me details on what you are trying to do with the HAM setup... maybe I or someone else can help.

Did you get wifi printing working?

              Computer idiot (me)

Yes it is much more, not intentionally, the situation arose as I had need to quickly download contents and clear cards. Wife was storing photos on the sd cards and I needed some for use in our big camera. The vista computer was in use so I tried the lappy.

Limited to no success. Some cards would read with a program I can't remember then suddenly it wouldn't read anymore. No the printer is not "found" by the lappy and the radio issue. Ugh!

I have a wouxon ham and its a pain to program off the radio itself so I was trying to move the software to the lappy, no dice. I tried to down load a Linux version online but then read it might brick my radio and got chicken.

That's about it, life got busy and I haven't had much time to go fiddle with it.

Bugs me the optical drive on the vista doesn't appear to write? That leaves the drive on the lappy as the only writing dvdrw. I'm telling you computers drive me crazy! They almost seem to work well when it's not crucial but when you need them for something it gets all jacked up.

Printer, canon 870, have no clue why it won't work over wifi. its currently cabled to the vista computer and works off that comp. however the reason I bought it was that I thought all my devices, iPad, phone lappy etc. would be able to use it. Do away with the email myself to print it out over there crap would be over. I've been disappointed ever since lol.

                OK... printer first.

Have you configured printer to connect to your wifi? Entered wifi SSID (network name) and password? If not, u should be able to google that and fix easily!

Linux drivers for the 870 will need to be installed onto lappy.

Let me know if you make progress!

...and don't sweat the small stuff! Optical drives die, they can also get dirty inside. Have you tried a can of air or cd cleaner?
Card reader... hmmm might look into an inexpensive usb style that supports Ubuntu! Strange that it works sometime and doesn't others!

You have to go to the location where u dl the canon file to then either extract or run it.
