This time it's from the private sector... for now. A company named Renew embedded wifi access points into public trash cans in London before the Olympics, in order to stream ad content onto them (well, that's where it belongs, anyway). Well, they've now figured out another way to utilize these - collecting the cell phone data for those passing by, and tying it to people. As they tout it, it's the "tracking cookie for the real world". Wifi has to be enabled on the cell phone, of course, which most people do.

And yes, cell phone companies can do that same thing by triangulating your phone's signal on their network, and they and the phone manufacturers can and do gather location data from that and the GPS. This is just another way you're tracked, is all

Cell phones can also track every cell/WiFi/Bluetooth around your phone, and report that info as a data-point to the cell tower. Don't murder anyone with an iPhone that you can't pull the battery from-on your person, or when conspiring ahead of time in the same place as theirs is on... :P
