I always partition my drives with all programs and OS on one drive and Data on the other. Just had the 500GB HD fail on Friday.

I would say short of buying a NAS with redundancy, burning DVDs is probably the best way to go. Its the least likely to fail when you really need to recover your data.

I use a NAS with RAID-X. It has 4 bays but I currently only have 2-2TB drives in it. I don't trust a single-drive as a solid backup device.

Thanks to all for your input. I bought a Seagate GoFlex ultra portable hard drive, from a member on this site in an unopened box. The hard drive in my tower is 500 GB, this drive is also 500 GB. Did the first back up, took 15 mins.
If you leave it plugged in it will do automatic back ups as things change, or you can unplug it and run a back up whenever you want.

Only negative is how long it takes to get a complete back up. Compared to a local drive.
Crashplan allows you to backup to a local drive as well as online. At least the Pro version does.
