Linux on a computer you already have unused/retired in the garage, maybe...

I am surprised how well some of these old computers (notebooks I had sitting around) run with a non-*buntu Linux distro like Pear Linux, even with 768MB RAM with an IDE (4200RPM) drive. Everything worked pretty-much OOTB. Quicker install than Windows, all devices were working, and no drivers to find.

Seriously for basic web browsing anything will do pick up an old used machine off of ebay or Craigslist and do a clean windows install on it.

I'm using scarped machines at home with core 2 duo's and 4 gigs of ram works just fine for Firefox...

my desktop does all the heavy lifting
