I haven't ran virus protection on my own windows boxes for about 10 years. I haven't gotten bitten either.

But I've fixed a fair amount of computers to know its a real problem for a lot of users. What I have noticed over the last few years is that propagation seems to have switched back to email where most free products don't offer any protection and the naivety of users is greater, especially when these emails come from "people they know".

And then there are the people that still get bit looking at porn. My favorite is when I get calls that they have that FBI Warning screen as soon as they boot. LOL.

I usually tell friends and family to just use the free Avast AV.

They get bit as many times as Norton, AVG, and similar products.

One good thing is that even with free AVs, most people who get bit usually have a clean computer when I get on the device... the free AV usually cleans any issues soon after they get bit, providing that the AV doesn't get screwed by the problem from the get-go...

I use and have used Avira Anti Virus Prem for years along with
Malwarebytes and Super Anti Spyware to clean.

          Microsoft Security Essentials.

If you are using anything else on a paid for license, you are doing it wrong.

Just to add my 2 cents as an IT person. #1 cause of viruses is the user. a little caution goes a long way.

              My picks

              Free: Microsoft Security Essentials
