ADP is a very useful and really easy to administer tool. Creating the security hierarchy is however a bit more of a task as it will require you to be very familiar with the company / client composition as well as how to plan for growth at any tier. Good luck have fun!

It is not bad, not as slick as VMWare but you can't beat being free.
You can absolutely create VMs with VMware Player. You can also use the converter and move them to your ESX/ESXi system.

Nice to know, thanks. I wonder if this is something they added recently? I started using VMWare Workstation when it was version 6 and I recall one of the restriction on the player was that it could playback but couldn't create new VMs.

Maybe I'll stick with only the VMWare player now for new versions (using version 9 now) if it can be used to create new VMs too.

Mark Minasi's books always walk you through the building of an AD domain. They are great for getting your feet wet with AD. I'd advise...

Also, the Trainsignal videos are excellent. They provide great education on building and maintaining a proper AD.

Technically, you create which he stand alone convertor, and if any changes need to be made, you must reconvert. VMWare Workstation allows on-the-fly changes and is worth the $199.

vmware esxi is free and soooo much better then vmware player. If you can sit in an interview and say you can manage an esxi environment that says a lot.

AD grab the work book from your local college and download the free software from MS. And start having fun. If your not breaking it your not working hard enough.

Ps I highly recommend a class like comptia A+ at your local collage. Covers the basics of it all. Your a power user that only understands how to make some things work. You dont know how or why they work and this will hurt you in the IT field. If your in OC pm me.

Agreed but ESXi requires dedicated hardware for the hypervisor. Plus the vSphere stuff on another workstation to properly manage it...

Nothing that getting old gear on craigslist and ebay cant fix. Might as well grab some switches and router for cheap. I've actually managed to find full racks of gear at recycling centers before so that is another thought to getting gear to build a home lab for cheap.

Now it seems that I have hit several walls here and there, the last one is POWER SHELL and ACTIVE DIRECTORY.

                          WTF?

There was no mention of active directory or PS in the orignal ad that I saw, but like 4 out of the 15 questions seemed to be focused on it at the interview.

HOW the hell can a guy get experience in MS Server and or Active Directory if he has not had any exposure to it? Besides some cool video dvds I found on MS Server 2008 (trainsignal or something) is there any easy way or quick e-book to read or SOMETHING to get like a crash cource in Active Directory?

Anyone? Hello? I am sick of these interviews being learning processes, I want one of them to become a JOB and maybe a career!

I just do not have thousands of dollars to throw at a school to learn this stuff so I gotta pick it up on the cheap.
Also do a search for directory services, X.400 and X.500. LDAP is a subset of X.500.

It is a great system to manage everything in a network. As much as people dont like Novell, it caused Microsoft to step up their game in Active Directory.

Active Directory? To be honest it's a bit overrated. It's very simple to manage and doesn't require as much hocus pocus as some people might lead you to believe, although if you are not technically savvy it's going to be hard.

But for the regular users they don't see any of it, it's meant to be transparent to them.

In any case I'd start looking at some youtube videos on the subject and go from there. Some of them will suck, so be on the lookout.

Been using it for years. Novell eDirectory is much better than Active Direcotry. But I am moving the company to Windows 2008 fir long term planning. Since Novell got sold to Attachmate I am not happy with the slowness of responce from the company.
