Try connecting a computer directly to the modem via the Ethernet port, then check and see if you're getting better speed.

Note that you need to reboot the modem if you're using cable modem or your PC won't register properly on the network.

If you're using Comcast, there's a high chance it is the modem. I had similar issue recently after they did the speed increase. Had to return the rented modem and bought myself a Motorola, which works great.

Good for you. Glad it worked out. The only problem that you will face now is longevity of that device. Keep notes on when it start messing up. Store bought stuff usually seems to last a couple of years at least.

Low quality routers will usually have really bad WiFi speed, even if it does support a higher speed when directly connected (through ethernet). I currently have an internet plan that is 40mbps, but when accessing it through wifi, it is only 20mbps.

I'm too poor to buy a new router and i use ethernet anyways so it doesn't matter.

I've had many similar situations in the past where it was mainly the router. Might want to RTFM to learn some of the settings and understand.

On the rare occasion will it be the modem, but look at the router first. Also some devices may not react nicely and may need to be updated before it can play nicely.
