    Email Suggestions?

    Hi all,

I have a small business that I am closing down and will no longer have the use of the email service that came with the web hosting. I do have an old Lycos email account that I use for web contact, shopping, forms, etc. but I want a different account that I will use primarily for email with people I know well.

I'm leaning towards gmail but I know that they search content for marketing purposes. I'm not naive and I understand that once you hit the "send" button your privacy pretty much disappears. I'm just wondering if there is a better alternative for email that has at least one or two layers of privacy beyond what the freebie services offer.

Thanks for your suggestions and comments!

Most internet providers will also supply free email accounts as part of their service. I have Comcast and the email accounts they give are (relatively) spam and advertisement free.

Microsoft's @live.com and @outlook.com isn't bad either (formerly hotmail.com), though you'll be dealing with advertisement. Not too much though.

Gmail is probably the best especially if you have an android phone. It will sync your email along with your contacts and calendar. So if your phone takes a dive you have a backup copy on gmail. Or if you get a new phone all you have to do is login on your phone and everything comes back down.

GMAIL is the most superior of all.

You can pay $40 a year for @reagan.com. Ad free, no email scans.

I very rarely get spam or advertisements on my Gmail and ATT accounts (basically zero). There's a lot of good email providers out there, my suggestion is to pick one that your going to keep for awhile, not tied to some bundle service that cancels when you do, etc. If your worried about unwanted email get a second account to serve as a junk email account that you use when you know your signing up for something that requires an email address and know your going to probably get on some unwanted list.

My personal experience with three popular email providers:

Gmail is not tied to a service and actually is linked to many like youtube, etc. It's free and it just plain works!

ATT is good too (basically Yahoo), it's free or part of a package and you get to keep you email account if you cancel your service.

Comcast, part of a package. It was okay but what I don't like was the clock started ticking on your email account shortly after you cancel service with them which was BS. It was an all day affair for me to change all my accounts tied to my Comcast email address to my new email address. I think I had a 30+ day grace period before everything was shut down.

Gunbroker.com and a few other places require a "paid" email account to register.
