Laptop help!!!

I have a Sony vaio pcg-71913l it is extremely slow and will lock up if left alone for 5mins or more. If anyone can help it wouldbe greatly appreciated. I'm tired of using the library and iPhone to access the web and do homework.

I have tried to do a system restore but no luck and my last restore point was after the problem started.

open your temp folder under "windows" and delete EVERYTHING. then go to the control panel and remove EVERY program that you do not use and then download malwarebytes here (I have it in my dropbox, update will be automatic after you install it.)

If you were closer to Riverside I'd fix it for you... sounds like your best bet would be to back up all your user files and perform a clean install of Windows then all apps.
I am also assuming that you have HD space left ...
Do you suspect an infection?

The problem started when the whole java vulnerability thing was going. I get a constant java update in my notifications but nothing


I have deleted everything in temp folder and now running malware bytes
Seems to be a little faster but its not the same as when I got it.

you can try starting from scratch after backing up your files that really is the only other option.

In most cases, this is due to some rouge program (not necessarily a virus or spyware) running on the computer and eating up a lot of CPU cycles. If you press Ctl-Alt-Del and start the Task Manager, then click on the "Performance" tab, you can how much CPU cycle is being used. Normally your computer should idle at around 2 to 5%.

If the CPU usage is higher than that continuously, you can click on the "Processes" tab, click "Show processes from all users" and then click on the "CPU" column to sort running processes by how much CPU cycles they're using.

If you can identify the rouge application that is using a lot of CPU cycle, you can then identify which application is running it and possibly uninstall or delete it.

This usually won't work against virus or spyware but sometimes software bugs can cause this too. I've seen this on my brother in law's laptop, also a Sony laptop. In his case, it was the free Norton Anti-Virus that was causing it. I think the trial period ran out but the antivirus program tried repeatedly to run.

I've also seen it once on my colleague's laptop (Lenovo). In his case it was a Windows service (forgot name) that was trying to start but couldn't. We disabled it and the problem went away.

If everything else fails, you'll have to backup your files, then format and re-install Windows on the laptop.

Before you do that though, try running this free anti-virus scanner:

If you want your computer to run at about the same speed as new, then you should do a clean reinstall.

Format your harddrive, and reinstall Windows (7).

As mentioned a reformat and reinstall is best, but you can try a couple
things. First turn off system restore. Download Kaspersky TDSS Killer
and choose the option to clean all. Run it and see whats happens
after a clean and reboot and the last one is to download Combofix
from Bleeping Computer and save it to desktop.

Make sure to save what files you want to a flash drive and then run
Combofix. Just remember Combofix is like bleach to a pc.

You can also run SFC /SCANNOW and see what comes up.
