    Fast modems and fast wireless.

I am trying to upgrade my in home network to a faster modem (faster then my current comcast rental) and a faster wireless router witch is low level linksys....

I really would like to stay under 300... under 250 would be better... I will also be getting a better internet service from my provider as well to help with the boost

More info needed. How many pc's on your lan? Do they all have gigabit nic's? How many wireless devices? Etc, etc.

Changing your modem won't get you any more speed than what ever modem your isp gives you.

    Good info here.

Generally your wireless router is going to give you faster speeds than whats coming from your ISP

I run three apple TVs and two wireless comps and maybe three phones. Not all at the same time but I will say at the same time is two streaming while surfing the web and maybe online video game play

A 1G wireless modem is in the $50 range. As others have pointed out, your ISP speed is key for internet speed.

I have three teenagers so we have 5 laptops, kindle, ipad, windows media center tv's in 3 locations. 1G modem and a 1G switch for LAN traffic.

Your speed is limited by the lowest common denominator, which is the speed your Internet Service Provider has provisioned for you. You can upgrade all of your modems, access points, but will always be limited to your provisioned speed (in mbps).

Ditch the rented modem supplied by comcast and purchase a motorolla surfboard docsis 3.0 cable modem, $99.00. Run that to a dual band 4500/4500 wireless router, $170.00 and up. Make sure you have the 30 mbps (or higher) speed option from Comcast and done.

                      You are kidding right? LOL!

What speed are you paying for and what speed are you currently getting?
                      • Look at your bill, or call their customer service to determine what speed you are paying for.
                      • Use www.speedtest.net to get a good idea of what speed you are getting now. (run it @ morning, afternoon, evening and average them out)

It may be your connection is bad with the isp or you need to get a faster package from comcast! I do agree that you should buy your own surfboard modem and put that monthly rental fee back in your pocket, but it may not improve your speed. It will typically pay for itself in 10 months!

One word of caution, make sure that comcast supports docsis 3.0 in your area, and beware of tech support blaming your non-comcast supplied router in any future issues! <-- they like to point fingers at the stuff that isnt theirs!

Let us know your speed you pay for and average you are really getting!

This. I have the the 20mbps service from comcast with a motot surfboard I got off amazon - speedtests between 30 and 35mbps down and 5 and 8 up.

With that many wireless devices just make sure you have a good wireless setup. Simultaneous dual band routers are currently the big thing for wireless.

Heres a tech sheet on it. http://www.netgear.com/landing/dual-band.aspx It really helps when you are running many devices who are on many bands.

You might also consider adding an additional access point elsewhere in the house to extend the wireless network and keep the signal strong - assuming you have a place you can run them.

Another option is to use powerline adapters to make a physical connection using your homes electrical wiring and then add wifi access points or hard links (for the tvs, rokus, etc) which will help free up the wifi bandwidth.
