stupid smart phone question

Just got my first smart phone, Samsung Galaxy Nexus on Verizon, I don't want to risk going over my data allotment so I'm curious if there are ways to have non chargeable data. If I'm on my WiFi, is the data chargeable then or only when I want to surf the net away from any WiFi networks?

using wi-fi will not use your data. only when you not using wi-fi will it go toward your available data.

you can download apps to manage and keep watch of your data usage.
i personally use Onavo Count. however, i hear that 3g watch dog is also a good app for that.

Verizon also has an inhouse app to monitor data usage. I just got this phone set up for my brother. If you still have the manual it has step by step instructions how to put the widget on your screen so you can see exactly how much data you have left for the month. However if you even have the lowest amount they offer (1gb i think?) You will be hard pressed to break that unless you are constantly streaming things like movies and off of the wifi all the time.

In the phones settings tap "Data usage" and set a mobile data limit. This will prevent you from using more data than your plan has.
