Is it worth getting my laptop(s) repaired?

I have two laptops that dont work:

First is a Sony VAIO, about six years old. When plugged in, and the power button pushed, the power light at the bottom right of the keyboard, and the three leds at the top right next to the power button flash in unison about every 3 seconds. There is a very faint audible 'click' when they flash. That is all that happens. No fans, or ay other noises. I have tried a 'generic reset', disconnecting the AC and removing the battery and then holding down the power button for 60 seconds, and then putting it back together and pushing the power button.

Another detail. For about a year now, if the AC was unplugged while the computer was on, it would power off immediately. We figured the battery had gone kaputt and just made sure to leave it plugged in at all times, or to do a shut down if it needed to be unplugged.

What are the possible issues with this laptop?


Second Laptop is a Lenovo G550. I left it on and open overnight, and the next morning found that my cat had spit up a little puddle of saliva on the keyboard. Now, when I try to turn it on, the power light will come on and stay on, but that is all that happens, no fans, no drives spinning. I have recovered the files from the hard drive, but I would love to get this computer going again. Is it worth it to have it looked at? Or is this possibly something I could fix myself?

the sony sounds like its just the batteyr if it works while its plugged in. the lenovo on the other hand sounds like a mothernoard issue. its hard to tell without seeing it. some p;laces will do a free diagnostic if you look around. i know i do but youre a little far from me

The duplicate post issue is raising it's head more and more with the slowness of the website.

I wouldn't pay to have them repaired. I would go on ebay and try some parts. For instance, I had a laptop where our son poured water on it. Dried it out, wouldn't work. Pulled the keyboard out and got some signs of life, so I went on ebay, bought a keyboard and replaced it. Lasted for another couple of years before it had system issues that I decided not to worry about.

haha that sucked!! yeah dont pay to get it repaired if you dont have to. like i said there are a lot of places that will do a free diagnostic to at least tell you what is wrong with it and if you should replace it or how much they woulkd charge to fix it. it could be the keyboard it could be a myriad of things

Vaio sounds like battery, but 6+ years old laptop isn't worth paying someone anything to fix, it's maybe worth $150-200 on eBay.
Lenovo could be keyboard or motherboard. Kb is easy to swap, buy a used one and if it doesn't fix the issue it's a fried motherboard.

3 year old laptops are not worth repairing. 6? Do not pass go, go straight to the trash.

Those working screens are worth buck to some people, ebay them.
(Make sure to keep your hard drive.)

The Sony, it is only the battery. If it works with the bat. removed, leave it out until you can replace the battery.
The other, no way to tell except for a full trouble shooting session. and not worth the bucks, in my opinion, to pay for it. You can always get the hard drive backed up OR<..... if it is the same type of HDD, use in interchangably in a NEW laptop...
Most important of all, GET RID OF THE CAT, RESCUE A DOG..
