Win 7 in experts in here

I committed a cardinal sin recently. I upgraded two things at once on my desktop. My old desktop had been running fine with Win Vista on it.

I bought an ssd and also bought a copy of Win 7 Pro and installed both at the same time.

I know, bad juju, but I am perplexed at two issues that are annoying the crap out of me. I think one is hardware related and one software, but I would like to know for sure.

    Software:
Whenever I click on a link or right click a new window, more often times than not windows will load the new window and then revert back to the original window. I have to click the new tab again to go to the page I wanted to load. I am using the latest version of Firefox and this is really annoying. I have tried going into the Firefox settings but I can't find anything that changes this behavior.

    Hardware:
The other thing is my computer keeps freezing. This happens most of the time when I click on a video link but not always. If I wait a few minutes it returns to normal and the video plays fine. I thought maybe video drivers but the nvideo software says I have the latest version.

    Any solutions?

    John
And in all fairness, just because JMB did it doesn't mean anything. He'd have won WWII with a soup can, a fork, and a couple rocks. Seriously, even McGuyver and Steven Hawking get together every now and then and are like "How the **** did he do that?..."

    Firefox
    Tools>Options>the 'Tabs' tab

unselect, 'Dont load tabs until selected' or remove checkmark, whatever term is best for you

or, Select or put a checkmark in
"when I open a link in a new tab, switch to it immediately"

not sure which of these options might apply to your issue

the video just sounds like it pre-loading or caching the video file before it starts playing
before you click a link next time, Open task manager first, click the CPU column, wait a second, then click it again, to sort the column by highest CPU usage at the top
then, open/click your link, and see what the CPU usage does.
it could be anti-virus scanning your link before presenting also

Not sure if you have tried to check for the latest firmware on your Motherboard for the Hardware issue. Software wise, do you get the same results using google chrome?

I just upgraded my old Compaq Laptop with an SSD. It's "celeron" based. It's sluggish as all hell. I think it was faster with the 7200 rpm drive in there.

I opened a can of worms there, but my first problem is obvious. the processor sucks, and my hardware is too old.

You said it was an old desktop .. did you run the Win 7 compatibility check before you upgraded? You may just have hardware compatibility issues. Others have answered the browser question above.

Tag as mine is acting similar. Hanging all the time and freezing when I watch videos. The sound keeps going though. Does yours do that too? Mine does it everywhere but I first noticed it in Firefox. (Win 7 ultimate)

Windows 7 likes >2GB of RAM, it will run on less, but even the install time suffers.

How "old" is it? Dual-core, Quad-core, how much RAM?

Tripper: I tried adjusting the settings in Firefox but nothing I have tried seems to make any difference. Good idea about task manager though, I will try that next time to help identify the culprit.

Ramon: I haven't checked on firmware or bios upgrades for my motherboard. That's another good suggestion, thanks.

ElDub: I did use Win7 compatibility checker and it passed with no problems.

The86: It is a Quad-core proc and I am running 4 gigs of ram. I don't think that is an issue, although it is only DDR2 ram.

Thanks everybody for your tips and suggestions; I will try them out tonight and report back my findings.

Quad core is good . I just ran across this article and will have to make some changes to that pc that I put an SSD in. It does speak about latest drivers and of course latest hardware is developed to take advantage of SSD's.
