5Mb is barely fast enough for a single HD Netflix feed if you're doing nothing else with the internet. My suggestion is no less than 6Mb plus another 5-6Mb for each additional streaming device and if you can afford it I'd go with at least 15Mb.

3 should still work good with one or possibly two streaming devices at a time. What is really important is making sure your home network is really good. Ethernet if possible instead of wifi. Making sure you aren't sharing the wifi channel with your neighbors routers and so on.

20~30mb/s is good enough to do whatever you want on the internet.

These are the minimum speeds that Netflix recommends starting with bare minimum/lowest quality video and working up to HD. I assume this is per simultaneous feed and likely assumes you aren't web surfing or downloading at the same time. I'd want at least 10-15Mb/s.

Get the best service you can afford. Download is nice but if you ever want to do anything more than just watch HD with your net get as much upload as you can afford.

I have 6/1, it sucks, it's the fastest I can get.

Dude...wtf? That is the shizz. On a sidenote, what modem would you recommend for Comcast cable? I've been leasing a modem for prolly 10 years. Time to buy my own.

With comcast you'll spend 84 bucks a year, every year, forever. You can buy a modem for less than that.

20+ Mb/s should be sufficient for Netflix and playing on your xbox or websurfing at the same time. Hell I'm watching netflix (HD turned off) through my phone while posting on this forum and im only getting around 2 Mb/s

Like many people already point out, 3mb/s is marginal for Netflix. 5 mbs is better. Given that you only use 1 device for streaming video at a time, including YouTube and the like, faster speed is nice but not a must. For online gaming, ping is more important than bandwidth. Make sure u know how much u have pay after the first 6 months before deciding on more speed.

im getting like .9x download and upload on my time warner. no wonder netflix on my xbox sucks... my router is like 7 years old i think i need to upgrade it the modem too.

I wouldn't go less than ten, but if 15 or 20mbps is doable for only a little more, go that route. 3mbps is way too slow for what you want to do.

Definitely buy your own modem.

If you buy an older DOCSIS 2 modem, in some locales, you can actually get more downstream speed than you pay for, as the providers have a harder time capping the bandwidth with DOCSIS 2. The flip side is that in a really busy cable area, you can also get less than what you paid for, so it depends on how many other homes in your area are using the same cable (also DOCSIS 2).

DOCSIS 3 caps pretty precisely, so you do get exactly what you pay for, no more, no less.
