MSWord - shareware type program available?

Is there a simple (virus-free) shareware program out there that does simple word processing documents on the PC platform? I'm a Mac guy, but my daughter just got a new PC laptop. She is in HS, so only basics needed to write a paper, etc.

Openoffice.org / LibreOffice.org. Reasonable substitute for the commercial software packages.

Another vote for Open Office (which I guess is now LibreOffice).

IF you don't want to go that route, you could always sign up with Google Mail, then use Google Drive to convert your existing Word Doc into a Google Doc format, and then use Google Docs to finish your Word work.

Used to love OpenOffice. There were a few - a very few - compatibility issues with MS Office, mostly involving stupid things like TOC's, but in general it was almost a virtual clone of Office 97. (Incidentally, I think Office 97 was the absolute pinnacle of MS Office, and development should have just completely ****ing stopped then.)

I wound up getting MS Office 2010 because I absolutely HAD to have full compatibility and I couldn't **** around with TOC's and such, and because my company has a deal with Microsloth so I could get it for $9.95.
