    Domain forwarding behavior

Hoping someone can answer this here:

We're in the process of moving to a new website. I plan to forward our domain to the new site URL. My question pertains to behavior of a specific page from the old site for a specific product. This link has been spread into multiple forums so I need the link to continue to work. The old URL looks something like this:

    The new URL would be:

If I forward ebrworks.com to ebrwebstore.com will the old link continue to function and hit the new site?

Thanks for any help on this. My searches on this specific subject have been fruitless.

There can be implementation-specific details (exactly how the forwarding is done) but in broad strokes, you have it right.

Are you doing it yourself? You should be able to do a permanent redirect, which will transfer search engines and Google's PageRank, as well as relevant info. Users will be automatically directed to the new site. Check with the host.

I wouldn't even bother forwarding. I'd just have both ebrworks.com and ebrwebstore.com be used for the same virtualhost with the same htdocs directory. So both www.ebrworks.com/widget.html and www.ebrwebstore.com/widget.html load the same page and you can have them both go to the same logs.

We're hosted with GoDaddy for the old site and they have a domain forwarding option. I assume this is what I want.

Sorry, I'm an amateur with this. The old site is hosted with GoDaddy. The new site is hosted with BigCommerce. I have no idea how to do that.

Ah, nevermind. I looked a BigCommerce and that service doesn't support multiple domain names to the same account. I've never heard of BC before, but it looks like a managed hosting/packaged service, which makes sense on why they don't allow multiple domains.

But yes, Domain Forwarding will do what you want it to do.

Just edit your record on GoDaddy for ebrworks.com to Domain Forward to ebrwebstore.com and the actual URLs will map accordingly.

I have jocabphoto.com as the primary domain for a Zenfolio hosted account that I have, and jocabphoto.net is a Domain Forward (301) to jocabphoto.com.

Example: http://www.jocabphoto.net/brett_rossi/e4c500d52 forwards to http://www.jocabphoto.com/brett_rossi/e4c500d52 appropriately.

On the flipside, I have both ocabj.net and ocabj.com on a VPS (Linode) host and ocabj.net and ocabj.com vhosted domains that are 'live' but load the exact same source files. But technically, I rendered that moot since ocabj.net is my own personally hosted wordpress blog, and ocabj.net is set in the wordpress config, so going to ocabj.com will all contain links to ocabj.net pages by virtue of wordpress using the known domain.

I do a motorsports TV show on the net and use a forwarding.
The address I use now is www.SpeedSceneLive.com but that goes right to www.speedsceneracing.com and the original site works just like we are using the forwarding address.
No glitches or anything. The only problem is that as far as web stats or traffic, the speedscenelive does not show up anywhere, only the speedsceneracing does.

Assuming the URL path is the same, and only the domain changes, shouldn't you just need to set up a CNAME record and that's it?

Seems like the lowest-overhead way to go about it, anyway.

                      Ex:
                      Code:
                      ebrworks.com. CNAME ebrwebstore.com.
                      www.ebrworks.com. CNAME www.ebrwebstore.com.

cname records won't fully encompass the correct behavior he wants. Making www.ebrwebstore.com a cname for www.ebrworks.com (or vice-versa) won't cover the bare domain (no www.) or subdomains. So then he'll also have to create records for the bare domain and other subdomains.

Doing a single domain forward will cover all those situations.
