    USB fire help!!!

It didn't actually catch fire but it could have!!

I plugged in a pair of video record glasses on my computer. I started smelling burnt plastic and luckily I unplugged it in time. The USB cord is melted. I have since plugged in different devices to test it with no issues.

Am I correct in assuming the device is defective? crappy made in China

I'm surprised the USB port didn't shut off. I've had a few issues with USB ports with dust in them and the computer noticed the power spikes of a short and shut the USB port off.

Anyway, sounds like a defective or poorly designed device.

It is hard to imagine enough power in a USB port (from a system, not a separate hub device) as the power is limited to 450mA total for that group of ports. Some are as weak as 250mA. That is not enough to even warm things up overmuch. I think power was back feeding from the devices battery somehow.
...but their exists also in the human heart a depraved taste for equality, which impels the weak to attempt to lower the powerful to their own level, and reduces men to prefer equality in slavery to inequality with freedom.

I've since plugged in other things to the USB with no issues.
The problem is either the cord or the video (spy) glasses.
