I know it's hard to give up good working older equipment but in the long run I'm betting you would be happier.
yep...you can get some really good hdmi/3d receivers with DTSHD(etc.) for around $200 these days.

There wasn't enough info in the OP to properly answer the question(which is why I asked). I also have a very old receiver(had to dig it out of the garage when my newer H/K died on me), but it does have optical. The op may simply not have an optical cable and is trying to figure out a way to use composite.
Just an FYI on that note. If you have an older unit that does have optical it doesn't neccesarily mean that that specific input will work with many newer pieces of equipment.

My older Sony surround receiver's optical in was not compatible with my new Panasonic Blu Ray's optical out.

            That's not what "FUD" is.

And yes, I agree that $200 is a little on the low side to be expecting something decent. Of course what could be done is getting a newer cheap receiver with pre-amp analog output and connecting that to the older receiver if he'd rather use the marantz as the amp, at that point he'd be using the new receiver as nothing more than a DAC/switch.

Coded-Dude, I assumed he had the sense to check the back of the receiver to see if it had a toslink connection like the one on his TV, as that is such an absolutely basic thing to do at first.

                Analog and digital lag:

I hooked up a TV to an old receiver and the sound from the TV was faster than the Analog.

It was not too noticable from the audio being out of synch with the video- not like a kung- fu movie

The optical cable solved the issue.

I did not think that it would be worth the time to bother getting the optical cable... I really did not understand how much more lag the RCA - Analog format has when compared to the optical cable.

If you want to enjoy your sound.......go digital(time to upgrade your receiver). /flame suit on for the old timer analogue guys.

I think I notice more a difference between analogue and digitial audio than i do between HD and SD video(relevant to the codec/format/compression/etc.).

Amazkn has adapters for $5 that let you connect rca red and white to the marantz.
