    Windows 7 copying multiple files

does anyone else have the problem when your trying to copy multiple files, say 100 files, from an external hard drive or what not to another hard drive, windows will only copy 30 or so files, and then only 5-10 at a time after that. It's rather annoying trying to copy 250 picture files.

Nope. I do backups by drag & drop. Never had problems with copying thousands of
    files. Usually 100GB worth.

No issues here as well. I would check the USB cable (try a different cable).

I copy lots of folder and LOTS of data all the time at work. No problems for me.

What edition are you using, maybe Home or whatever has a limitation?

I've got Home Premium here, and just had to move the installers for the complete Autodesk Product Design Suite Ultimate from one hard drive to another yesterday. ~35 gigs total, uncompressed data, somewhere north of 60,000 files. No problems at all, took about 8 minutes, transfer rate peaked at about 78.1 MB/S. (Of course, then the cache filled up and it slowed down again!)

Sounds like your drive is overheating. Extreme slow down and/or failing to copy after extended usage is a good sign of this. If it's in an external case, try putting it in airflow of a fan or just opening the case. If that solves your issue, you should change the case as it's not giving adequate airflow.

No - and no problem for a long time. You have some other issue, it isn't the OS for sure (or if it is like RAM cache issues or something - it isn't normal and is a problem injected into it from something else happening).

BTW - I still prefer and like to use robocopy from the command shell. Especially when I use it to update copy differentially.

USB 2/3 drives no, but flash media, yes. Flash media tends to saturate the I/O when I transfer > gigabyte.

One problem I have with Vista & 7 is that Windows won't just start copying the files like you told it, then do the calculations as to how long it will take...

It wants to build some list of files to copy, licking all of them somehow, THEN starts the copy, rather than doing what all prior versions of windows did: what you told it to do, THEN do the calc once it has started.
