    Nest learning thermostat

Anyone else have one of these? I just installed mine on Saturday and I am loving it. It's far too early to tell if it's going to save any money with heating/ cooling efficiency, but the fact that I can access it from an app on my phone or iPad is awesome. Forgot to turn the heat down when you left the house? Do it from your phone. Plus, it's gorgeous. Everyone that's been by the house since I installed it was amazed with how good it looks.

We installed one in our cabin in the mountains. It's awesome to start the heat before you leave to head up in the winter.

      It looks pretty cool to...

Owning a HVAC company I "have to" stay up to date on all the newest stuff. I have installed a few of these, and they are decently made. Personally, I don't want it "thinking" for me, knowing when I'm home or not, etc... So I went with the color HD Honeywell Prestige setup. So I have the touchscreen remote upstairs as well as the outdoor sensor, and the app for my droid. Call me a control freak, but I feel like its a superior product.

i've saved about 30 percent on my energy usage since i installed mine months ago. My GF and I were constantly changing the temp (she was too hot, i was too cold, etc). With the ease at which it learned our schedules and it shutting itself off when we're away it's been perfect for us.

and it does cater to my inner lazy man by being able to see and adjust the temp from my phone or computer. Don't think i've actually touched the thermostat in over a month.

The energy savings were compelling, but this was a major part of my decision to buy. Often I'm fine when I go to sleep but wake up in the night ROASTING. Now I can just reach over to the nightstand and turn on the AC instead of getting out of bed and walking down the hall. I know, I know, First World problem. Still, it's a great feature.

Hadn't heard about the Honeywell one, I spend most of my down-time at work trolling tech blogs (and calguns, now...) and they've been spooging all over how great the Nest is because the company was started by a former Apple guy, but the reviews back it up. With us averaging $300/mo on electric (whole house forced air) I was more than willing to gamble on it.

nest didn't invent the learning thermostat but it did put a new spin on making it more simple.

with all things being equal i found the nest:

                  1. easier to learn how to use
                  2. better looking on the wall (replaced a honeywell)
                  3. better web and smart phone apps.

I got the Nest Learning Thermostat 4 months ago and I love it.

Here are some Nest Theromostat reviews if you plan on getting one:

I was thinking about one with WiFi abilities, but always have to simplify my WPA2 passphrase, as some devices are not able to input, or connect using extended ASCII CHARs in like "ħ█╚"... D-Link cameras, for one.

I work at an HVAC company in LA. I myself havent jumped on it yet. We have one in the office too see if we like it. Its nice that unlike most other tstats on the market you dont have to buy a other module to have wifi capabilities. The Honeywell's need a redlink and i believe the new Carrier infinity controls need something else. My issue with the Nest is that it doesnt work with any 2 stage condenser/furnaces. Ive heard that the 2nd gen fixes that, but ill wait to see if it actually does. Im content with my Honeywell 8000. The best thing about it is its simplicity and how sexy it looks.

The price seems a little high, but maybe I'm just out of touch with thermostat pricing. I wonder if our dogs would effect the auto programming? I also see a wide range of prices from $250 range to $350 range.

Zealot9802: Can you offer up your tips for everyone? I know our usage varies in these ranges. I have also noticed that out electric bill increases during the winter. I'll drop you a PM.
