dlna - what else am i missing?

got a xbr9 tv. dlna ready. also have a netgear readynas duo. dlna service enabled. i setup the folders/setup in the nas properly.

now when i go to the tv, i can see the nas in the options. i can even see the sub-folders but underneath the sub-folders no file is showing. i redid my setup earlier and re-scanned for the media too. it's been an ongoing problem.

most files are .mkv or .mp4 extensions; some are .avi. i've been able to play one or two before but they were probably .wmv?? i cannot recall.

the tv just serves up the video signals, right? it doesn't have to decode? though oddly, it cannot see the files themselves. or is the issue the nas where if it's a file or codec it doesn't recognize, it won't even serve up the file listing?

just seeing if i can get away from having the laptop connected via hdmi to serve up content.

Are these files downloaded? It probably has to do with the encoding.

according to sony your tv will support MPEG2, LPCM, MP3, and JPEG. so you'll have to set up a media server to convert your other files to mpeg2.

mute.. some are.. some aren't. i suspected it's codec related. some are my dvd's i extracted and compressed using handbrake. this way, i don't have to keep on switching bluray disks and i can just select them from the tv when my little one gets tired what he's watching. and sometimes, i'm doing stuff with the laptop so i guess it's offline to me if i still have to use it as a media server where all tv does is show the video signals, unlike it connecting to my nas

thanks laythor. i suspected that might be it but i wasn't sure if the tv's purpose is just to "serve" up the content. i was under the impression with dlna, the tv can just connect to a network device and to the tv, it was just a tv signal. guess it needs some kind of understanding of the codec. sigh...
