    IP Web Cam Q

I have a IP web cam set up and can view it from inside my house. I'm having trouble setting it up so I can see it outside my network. I think I need to do something with port forwarding?

Any tips on how to set up my web cam so I can see it from outside my own home network?

    Thanks.

I went through the same problem - mine was because my internet connection was dynamic. Sorry if this is too dumbed down for you, but the camera relies on a static IP from what I was told.

I called tech support (I bought a Sharx camera) and the guy explained to me that everything I needed to do it was in the manual. There are third party websites that give you a fixed IP for free. I think the one I used was no-ip.com. that way, I could log onto the website (the no IP website) and access the camera.

I used it for about 3 months, then my computer crashed and I was back to square one. I was too lazy to 're-learn' so haven't used it for almost a year

    Good luck!

There are two problems you may need to address, first the fact that you may have a dynamic IP address assigned by your DSL/Cable service as the "public" face of your home router, and second that your home router may be NATing (Network Address Translating) your Camera/DVR IP address used internally (private addresses) to this public dynamic address. This FAQ may explain. I'm not promoting this particular service its just the first relevant FAQ I found on google, research your own requirements.

The first problem is addressed by the dynamic DNS service and the second by configuring your router to port forward - usually your IP Camera/DVR will have a "Dynamic DNS" setting somwhere to help with these.

Google "Dynamic DNS" "Port Forwarding" IP/DVR support. Here is another link explaining the issues a little better (from dynDNS which your IP Camera may support directly)

The dLinks support connecting and updating a Dynamic DNS.

If you have Verizon they block TCP port 80 (well more, but this is the common one... and this port goes into limbo).

You can also go with another provider such as no-ip, and you just run an application on your computer (that is on), and this will update their DDNS automagically. Typically many people use an alternate port for FW internally such as TCP port, say 8901 (externally[on router's internet/WAN port]) => 192.168.1.10 PORT 80 which just redirects...

Using a non-standard port HELPS people not know what is running on that port (unknown service?) via a basic port-scan on your router's WAN IP.

V hit the nail on the head here. I went through the same issues with my ip cams, and before that my server....port 80 is likely blocked and additionally your cameras will need static ip addresses (the router has to have an address to go to..)

Check out port forwarding.com lot of good info on there to get you through this.

          Good luck!
