Need help shopping for a new home receiver. Just purchased an LG 55" tv but cant even hook up my receiver. I need 7.1, 1.3+ HDMI and 3d playback. Using it for 50/50 music and movies.

2nd for onkyo, having been a long time denon dealer (and still am) the onkyo smartphone app is da bomb! and they sound great too.

Those are all good options - I'd like to add a Sony too. Lots of features, good bang for the buck. I have one from the 1997 and its still working great.

You didn't give a budget or what speakers you're driving but Onkyo, Denon, and Yamaha make good solid receivers. Keep in mind a couple of things such as the fact that no receiver puts out it's full rated power into more than two channels. For example a 100w/channel receiver may be able to pump out 100w into two channels but when driving 5 speakers that may drop to 70w or even 50w and with 7 channels that may drop even lower. Onkyo tends to do a better job keeping up with 5 channels than most while non-Elite model Pioneers tend to do worse. Realistically movies rarely call on a receiver to pump 100w into all 5 or 7 channels at the same time but they may hit several at once pretty hard during action scenes so the quality of the amplifier section matters. The cost of having strong power supplies feeding the amps (like Onkyo) is heat and Onkyos need plenty of room for air to circulate around them. Between Onkyo and Denon Onkyo tends to have more features for the dollar invested and be easier to use but run hot and need good air flow.

When shopping keep in mind that manufacturers will only honor warranties when you buy from factory authorized dealers or factory authorized online dealers. Sometimes you can save some money by buying factory recertified products from an authorized dealer like Accessories For Less (A4L). Two of my four Onkyo receivers are from A4L and have been excellent. All that you lose is the factory warranty length is shortened to 1 year. These would be my recommendations, they are last years models but I like last year's Onkyos better than this years. Of these three the Onkyo has the most feature bang for the buck:

Onkyo is crap (sorry guys but it is) it does not come CLOSE to the two above.

Sony & Pioneer is Japan and you are paying $ just for that.

I have had nothing but problems with pioneer, I have had to service 4 units in a 6 month period (different models from the elite to the bottom)

Probably because he doesn't ever used 1. Currently, Onkyo does have the best smartphone app. I am having a problem with the endless updates on some of the Onkyo receivers. The TXNR616 needs to be updated with a thumb drive

What's your budget and how big is the room? Ascend Acoustics and Hsu Research are California companies. Ascend makes great speakers for the money and Hsu makes decent speakers and great subwoofers. You might also watch your local Fry's for sales on Infinity Primus P363 towers. The Primus aren't in the same league as Ascend CMT-340SEs but they often go on sale for less than $300/pair (the normal "each" price) and are great bang for the buck.

Step out of the norm and buy yourself something nice. Like a Rotel, NAD, Lexicon, etc. I'm still running an old Rotel RSX-972 with PSB speakers. There's nice home setups....then there's nice home setups if you know what I mean.

Meh, I wouldn't have anything less than Meridian in my home.
