It sounds to me like you have on your hands what is known as "a Seagate Brick." This happens after the drive reaches a certain amount of accesses and, due to a Firmware problem, it goes into a "locked state" and literally shuts down.
I suggest that you search for "I've got a Seagate Brick... HELP!"
