I've been using dish for the past 4 years. I paid about $90 a month. I dumped it a year ago and never looked back. Only thing I miss is the military channel. That's it. Sure as hell was not worth $90 a month though. Now I just run Netflix and watch my shows online. $9 bucks a month...can't beat that.

        - You can set this up on a laptop or a PC
        - Or you can buy a $200 barebones computer and create a standalone media server.
        - 'Free' shows:
        Youtube
        Food Network
        HGTV

I used this software to install on my XBMC box:
        http://openelec.tv/
This, or something similar. I run SageTV on a home built media server. That and internet is all you need.

We're all Netflix and Amazon Prime Videos here. We dumped cable 2 years ago. Netflix gets watched most, but some watching on Amazon prime as well. I have some cheap antennas to get OTA which gives us live TV for sports. I'm a season or two behind in most everything like Waking Dead and SOA, but I can watch 3 episodes while tinkering in the gun room since there are no commercials.

That's probably one of the biggest benefits. No frickin commercials to try to get you to buy something or that try to get our son to ask for something. We can control his TV much better so when he watches, it's good to go.

Every once in a while we have a hankering to get basic cable or something, but we never follow through with it.
