Camera monitor Slackware box back on, with more purpose.

So I turned my rack-mount Slack-box back on, as I had a need for an ftp server for dropping images from some cameras I placed around the house because my son is now taking the bus and going to be home alone for a couple hours on weekdays. I really want to make sure that my son doesn't bring friends in the house, and verify he is not trying to get into my locked bedroom with all the "hardware", or the computer room with the reloading equipment.

I missed her, so back into the swing of the cli.

2 accounts, one for each camera, and dropping images in that account's home dir. Dir separated by day.

Not a bad setup for a $79 and a $99 camera (with night vision) utilizing existing hardware for the FTP drop.
Wireless cameras from BestBuy (meh), as I didn't want to run wires through the dry-wall & stucco & run them up to the second story outside (especially in this heat in the attic), and I couldn't drop a NIM MOCA dev where the cameras are as there is no coax there.

    root@[!yourmom]:/home/[folder]# free

    -/+ buffers/cache: 80160 918756
    Swap: 1059256 668 1058588

(I UNC to the SAMBA shares [one per camera], if I want to view the jpgs.)

GUI... we don't need no stinking GUI on an one-trick-pony-ftp-server!

I did have to have my boss (NetAdmin-acutal [alternate-port-nazi-actual] ) open up the ability for me to hit http on alternate ports for remote monitoring, but worth it!

Now that we verified function for about a week, I dropped the RAID5 into fstab for an automount at boot, and dropping cam1 and cam2 into home folders now located on the RAID.

This is one test of the 1st 3 images on my hallway monitoring camera getting motion detect images, night vision.

Why don't you run Zoneminder? Easy to use with a more advanced feature set.

I had no idea what to do, so I went with the simplest option.

Input was what I was after, and suggestions...Checking it out now.
        EDIT:
configure: WARNING: You can call configure with the --with-libarch option.
This tells configure where to find architecture specific libraries.
The default of 'lib' is usually ok but 64 bit machines may require lib64.
        e.g. --with-libarch=lib or --with-libarch=lib64
configure: WARNING: You can call configure with the --with-mysql option.
This tells configure where to find the MySql C library and headers if configure cannot
        locate them automatically.
        e.g. --with-mysql=/usr/local or --with-mysql=/usr
configure: WARNING: You can call configure with the --with-ffmpeg option.
This tells configure where to find the ffmpeg root directory within which are the libavcodec
and libavformat files that can be used to build true MPEG streaming into ZoneMinder. Ensure that
your copy of ffmpeg has installed libraries as well as binaries (use 'make installlib'). If you
are using a local install of ffmpeg you may have to remove or rename a previous real installation
as the headers and libraries from that will probably be picked up before your local copy.
        e.g. --with-ffmpeg=/usr/local
configure: WARNING: You can call configure with the --with-extralibs option.
Ordinarily you will need to use this option only when your copy of ffmpeg has been built
with support for additional formats and you would use this option to detail which additional
libraries ffmpeg was built with so that it is able to link successfully with ZoneMinder.
You will need to wrap this option in quotes if it contains any spaces.
        e.g. --with-extralibs="-lmp3lame"
configure: error: You must call configure with the --with-webdir option.
This tells configure where to install PHP and web files and scripts.
        e.g. --with-webdir=/var/www/html or --with-webdir=/www/vhtdocs/<site>
I wanted to run as Vanilla Slackware as possible in case a rebuild that may be required, any other suggestions, as I don't do *buntu?

Without knowing why you want to run vanilla slackware and why you want to stay away from Ubuntu-ish distros, I'm reluctant to offer advice for other distros.

I am not looking for other distros. It took years (part-time) to learn Slackware, and am not willing to change.

I am pretty happy with how simple the setup is/went, but any suggestions for software that might be able to record, say video from the command line, (that does not have TONS of "special" dependencies) would be nice.

This thread is showing how simple the setup was, if others choose to monitor with sub-$100 cameras...

ffmpeg builds can be fun You will need it for most video capture setups. Check out motion, http://www.lavrsen.dk/foswiki/bin/view/Motion/WebHome if you are looking for a basic setup. CentOS might be easier than running slackware, but I get what you are saying about not wanting to change distros.

Meh, by and large they're all pretty similar. Ubuntu is just Debian in hot pants. Fedora and Red Hat have done some funky sh*t replacing sysvinit with systemctl and such, but the functionality is really mostly the same.

Any of the random gotchas that are different between distros can usually be googled without too much difficulty.
