Does anyone have a suggestion for antivirus software?

My subscription to my current software is going to run out soon and I just wanted to see what any of your tech gurus out there might suggest.

I have been with ESET NOD32 for years. Best out there according to Virus Bulletin since Kaspersky had gone down the tubes over a decade ago.

I always like to use a duel layer of protection... And it varies as times change... I'm currently using Sophos... Like it a lot!! And Microsoft Security Essentials.

ESET NOD32 is my favorite for home computers. For my laptop I have ESET Smart Security which is NOD32 plus a firewall. It's been on sale a lot at Newegg lately.

I've been using Microsoft Security Essentials on 4 of my computers at home for the last 2 years or so and never had any issues with any of the computers.

Not trying to argue but Kaspersky (in my own trials) was the lightest and most powerful antivirus suite. NOD 32 was second and Panda was good until they started playing with that panda cloud BS.

Run Kaspersky on my laptops, desktops, and 20 or so servers at work. Never one problem in the last 8 years. I personally wont trust anything else, it just works and I have no clue its there most the time.

Avast! - it's free to home users. It includes a malware blocker that is active when you're online. ESET is good but a resource hog. Symantec is worse. I've also repaired MANY computers with AVG that were infected.

Malwarebytes is very good for cleaning an infected machine but is not an active antivirus program.

Avast Free edition has been pretty good to me, but I don't do all the stupid stuff, I used to...

AVG is Browser Search hijacking to Yahoo, when I last I used them...

                            +1 on Kaspersky

It also warns about links to sites that install malware and other junk

A friend switched to Kaspersky after using microsofts anti virus
He was on Tube8 and one of the videos loaded trojan horses. They made it past microsof anti virus

I picked up a 5 user copy for $10 after rebate
And yes you can install on smartphones and or tablets
It has a sanbox feature where you can run files on Kaspersky to let them verify the files are safe before you download and install on your PC
Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT
                            (thanks to Jeff Cooper)

When did ESET become a resource hog? It's generally known for not being a hog. Could you give some memory and CPU usage numbers at idle? Perhaps there is something wrong with your system because running the version that includes a firewall and I'm showing .11% of CPU and 127K of memory - hardly a hog. On the other hand Kaspersky is or at least was a resource hog.

On a related note I use a multi-layered approach because as a tech I've seen too many ways that bugs get into systems. The 1st line of defense is common sense about where I go, where I get my software, and what email I open. The 2nd is an ad-blocker. The 3rd is World Of Trust which although it has a lot of politically motivated false alarms is a good reminder to be careful. Then there is a router/firewall and finally ESET Smart Security.
