If you were asking for the source code for the game engine, you'd have been just fine, because the game engine has been GPL'd for some time now. It's even available in several Linux repositories.

    BUT....

That CD has more than just the GPL'd game engine on it. It appears that you're asking for people to willingly commit copyright infringement. The game engine's GPL'd, but the game levels, trademarks, etc. on that CD are not.

Is it copyright infringement to get a copy of something that you rightfully own?

If that were the case every single mp3 would be infringement, even if you created it from the original that you bought in a store! I have racks of CDs that make up the music I listen to, and copies of games I owned so I wouldn't risk losing the original while traveling

Anyway, I just realized it's on amazon for $2.. just gotta get a few items lined up so I don't pay $4 shipping just for that

Probably not, no. But then it'd have to be proved, with a receipt or other proof-of-purchase. Better to just get a new one for $2 or so like Merc1138 suggests.

Actually, no, that's perfectly legal, as long as you have the originals. The law allows "archival backups" of digital information to be made, so that covers ripped CD's. Now, if you got your only copy from The Pirate Bay, well, that's a different story. :-)

Glad you found an inexpensive source for the CD.

I have a stack of CDs for games I no longer play, I think Quake 1 might be in it. I can take a look if you want. (But I just noticed you're halfway up the state from me, so it might be easier for you to just buy it from Amazon.)

unless you are running very old (like 2001 and earlier) hardware AND you have old drivers / active X (if it was even out back then) you won't be able to play off the install

Quake 1 requires API versions simply not available any longer.

                      Check out QuakeLive :

It's nostalgia. Makes me feel like I'm 11 again. Same reason I bought the original Doom for xbox360. It's also fun to go back to the grassroots milestones of fps games. Ever drive a car similar to your high school hot rod?

the sound track i could pass one. The Quake 1 level design is still textbook grade AAA+ material. Lighting was impressive before lighting even became "a thing" in games.

If you can't appreciate what Quake 1 did, then thats fine as long as you are not in the game design business. If you are, then my condolences to your creditors.

Steam has the entire Quake collection. It was recently on sale due to the convention.
