    Google Fiber. Gbit Internet

    I'm jealous of Kansas?

I think it's a bit misleading as not every resource that you could be transferring from is going to have this bandwidth available or would be throttled by other means to regulate QoS.

    Still, impressive.

You only download one thing at a time? It's not misleading at all.

I have 60 Mb U/D at a Colo and dual T1s at the office. @ home I have 18~24 down 1~ 5 up (burst). I usually run into limitations of the server/hops on the other end before I run out of bandwidth between me and the ISP.

Yeah, P2P could benefit from this. But at this time the technology is faster than -most people- can utilize (This is Kansas remember?). The practicality of the technology will expand into infrastructure in short time. Such is the nature of things.

I was mostly referring to it being misleading touting the service as delivering gbit internet globally, which seems to be what they're implying. That's just an impossibility for a majority of resources (currently). Hell, you might even need an SSD just to take advantage of this and be hitting the throughput limits of the remote server's storage!

Trust me, I could take advantage of it.

I love downloading things when plugged directly into the core switch in our data center. That thing has dual 10Gbps fiber uplinks connected to it.

NFPs and Education always seem to have ludicrous speed. Similar results when i was working with a local multi-billion dollar technology corporation that shan't be name but is pretty obvious.

Will this network have routing that would allow connection to Google services at gigabit speed?

That would make services like remote hard drive backup nice. A gigabit is what, 12.5 megabytes. You could backup drives in just an hour or so.

Why does Google want to be in the ISP business?

If you're on the Google hating bandwagon as a result of their shopping policy, probably because they want to censor the internet and push left agenda.

If you think the shopping policy was a business decision, probably because it makes them more money and diversifies their services and subscription services bring recurring income. They also probably want to sell advertising in some fashion while sidestepping current networks.

This has been a long time coming IMO. Google started public DNS servers not too long ago.

In practice over a Gigabit LAN, I've seen 80 megabytes per second.

^oops, maybe it was 125 megabytes. Always seem to put the decimal in the wrong place when I do math in my head.

I don't see that they need to get into ISP services for those two items you mentioned, either way.
