whats a good wireless router would you recommend that wouldn't cost an arm and a leg? wil be using it for home and will be connecting a couple of laptops and phones. security is a priority too. I'm actually running MBpro but the one from apple is mucho $$$, i would think other brands would do the job without paying premium.

Get a used Cisco (NOT Linksys) WAP from ebay. I have a 1232 that I picked up four years ago whic has been *rock solid*. I've used 1100s and 1242s in production environments with very good results as well.
They're very much worth it (as long as you're looking for a wireless AP that provides you with just wireless service). If you want to do some other cool **** with DD-WRT or something, go with one of those compatible routers.-- 09 F9 11 02 9D 74 E3 5B D8 41 56 C5 63 56 88 C0Comment

I like the Asus Black Diamond dual band router for the range if its 2.4ghz radio, the 5ghz side doesn't have quite the range but still does a good job.

ditto on this. i have one too and it's been pretty stable. i do not have a need to go back to ddwrt whenever they have a firmware for it (didn't last year).
pros:
small footprint, 2 usb's, easy interface. dual band. the 5ghz does look week but i don't have an issue connecting. but the wifi indicator is a couple of bars lower though. controlling bandwidth for other machines is easy. i don't play with ddns yet but it has that feature along with vpn, etc.
cons: had a hard time recognizing a new seagate goflex 3TB drive. but it can recognize my small 250gb 2.5" external drives though. so kinda a cheap nas at that point. there no guest account, which sucks because if you have guests over and to give them wifi, you'll have to put the wifi key and then remove later. i forgot to remove one so i changed my wpa key. a guest account would be handy.
they're fixing this with 3.x firmware version soon.Last edited by high_revs; 07-23-2012, 11:04 PM.Comment

If you go Cisco-brand, you pretty much have to go used, otherwise you'll pay through the nose. However, I personally would recommend looking for something that supports DD-WRT or OpenWRT. Check out this link.
