    iPhone 4 cracked glass

Wife dropped her iPhone 4 and the glass is cracked. It is still functional. I did a search but could not find the thread about replacing the glass.

If anyone has that link, please post it.

    Thanks in advance.

It's not as hard as you think but with the Iphone 4 and 4S the problem is they glue the glass, LCD, and frame together so you have to buy all 3 as a set and can't just buy the glass. Then the parts are not cheap about 80 dollars or more.

The worst part is most of the parts are not factory Apple parts they are reverse engineered parts from god knows where. Most of the time if it works afterwards who cares, but sometime you have tolerance issues or mechanical issues.

I know I use to repair I-phones awhile back but all the crap parts from the vendors and do-overs made it not worth it.

If you can just get another one, or see if you are up for a upgrade.

I fix iPhones on a regular basis. Amazon sells replacements for the 4 and 4s for about $35. Just make sure it matches the carrier, as there is a difference between a CDMA and a GSM phone. The whole process will take about an hour or more for someone who hasn't done it before.

The replacement screens you can buy are also plastic coated and the LCD is not the same quality as the original. For pretty much the same price you can have an OEM display installed at the Apple Store.

iFixit supplies genuine Apple parts...the LCD's from Apple for the 4/4S are the Hi-DPI "retina" display. Yes there are less expensive replacement displays available...you will be disappointed by the quality.

I'm assuming your wife cracked the front display...if it was the back glass:

iFixit's rear panels are also OEM and come WITH the camera lens and light diffuser for the flash.
You will never, in your life, have a chance like this again.
If I were you, I would not pass this up. I would not let this go by...this is rare.

You know what - we use smart phones in our products, and we tore apart an HTC Evo LTE 4G (Sprint) version.

Once we had the thing gutted, I beat the HECK out of the display for fun and it didn't break! I was using a pointed metal heat sink and hit it 10 times...

I only bring this up, cause my kids have broken more iPods than I can count. I'm not pushing HTC, Sprint or anything, I was just STUNNED that the display was so tough.

Found out later it's called Gorilla glass. Does iPhone use this?

I've looked into repairing LCD's and it's not trivial.

From what I'm reading, the iPhone 4 has the same glass as the HTC I was abusing... It's second generation "gorilla glass". I did notice the HTC had a solid metal backing behind the LCD (cast metal).

Yes, Apple uses Gorilla Glass. Apple pushed Corning to come up with a suitably strong glass for the iPhone 4.
Apple had an exclusive on Gorilla glass for about a year or so.

There's a video somewhere of the glass panel from an iPhone 4 held in a jig, and being deflected in the middle by some crazy amount. Tough stuff...but not unbreakable as the OP knows!

Not sure if its this phone, but there was a video on an andriod phone beating down a nail to the wood with its screen and it did not break.
