    DSL connection issues - thoughts?

I got a new modem and the connection doesn't seem to stay. It needs to be reset a lot.

Basically, the signal to noise ratio slowly drops while the line noise goes up and I lose sync. Then, I unplug the phone line from the modem and plug it back in and everything is great.

    Thoughts?

call your provider and ask them to do a line test.
If you have inside wiring on your phone plan, they should cover
any high noise problem all the way to the modem.

Is this new service or just a new modem?

The line test is the way to go, as a start.

You may have a bad filter between a phone and phone jack. They're like $2-3.

Make sure you DO NOT have the filter between the wall and the modem. The modem needs to be plugged in to the wall without a filter, as I have dealt with like 3 of our sales reps in the last 3 months getting sub-1Mbps because they were filtering DSL TO their modem, not to the phones...

I've been talking to an ATT tech online and he says the line is fine. Late night etc it's almost always okay but in the morning and early evenings are when I'm having the most problems. I get disconnected every morning around 9am it seems like.

No filters on modem, all phones have filters I've replaced them as well as unplugging them from the wall. Doesn't seem to make a difference.

                Probably a power issue.

If you have the ability, put a UPS on it and see if that helps. I used to have to power-cycle my DSL modem, and router all the time until I dropped a UPS on it.

As I was corrected in the past, a Power Regulator might help, but I personally have never needed to buy a >$80 UPS with power regulation built-in, and a standard UPS has always alleviated issues such as this for me in the past.

Just make sure to not buy the largest you can get if it is just for a DSL modem (w/ or w/out a router too) as it will draw more juice, as the larger the VA UPS you buy, there will be a residual cost monthly in your electric bill, unless you are going to put a computer on it too. It really makes more since if you have a wired computer next to it that needs to have cleaner power to it, too... unless you can find a really small VA UPS, or a larger one for use WITH a computer at the same location...

I also unplugged the phone line, then plugged it back in and it had the same effect as power cycling it but I will try using a UPS.

TBH I'm stumped. Probably just send the modem back and try another one.

Well before you send it back, try replace all the phone cords, we ran into an issue where someone was running with bad phone (regular cables) and after replacing them it worked.

but yeah if the cables dont work, then it's the modem, if you tried everything.

I live in an old house so I ran a cat 5 cable straight to the phone box ( bypass old crappy wireing) works great if it's possible to do

Who has land lines anymore anyways ?
