Laptop HEAT

I have read online that it is normal for these things to run hot. I have an
HP and notice that if I run just off the battery--(with no AC plug in place) it
does not get as hot as when I am charging the battery while using the unit.
Anybody else notice this with a different type laptop? The battery is good
for about 2 hours so I guess I will just keep running off the battery and
charge it while I am not actually using it. Pete

Batteries heat up while they're charging. Beware that the more often you run the laptop on the battery the quicker the battery will need to be replaced. They have a limited number of charge cycles and degrade (lose max capacity) with use.

I would 1st try blowing out (both ways) the fan, and any grills you see (looks like a car radiator) with some compressed air/compressor. One in (fan side), the other out (grill/vent side), and do it 2x from each direction and see if anything changes. When on batt, it could be downstepping the CPU speed (voltage too?).

If the BATT is getting hot, it might be time for a new one...

I agree with trying to blow out all the vents

BUT it is normal for the machine to get hot while charging for 2 reasons:
1) Battery heats up while being charged
2) while plugged in the laptop will be running at full speed with no power saving options turned on...which means more heat.

if your battery is fully charged and the machine is plugged in...take out the battery..this well cut down on heat and extend the life of your battery.
Just don't do what I do and trip over the power cord while there's no battery

I would only worry about the BATT heat if it is uncomfortable-hot to the touch.
(Meaning you don't want to keep your skin there...)

This only works with NiMH and NiCAD batteries. Li-ion batteries don't have the same issues. In fact you want to leave the battery in since it acts as a UPS and power filter.

If the heatsink/fan are clogged you will need to open the machine to clean it out, using a can of computer duster (it is not air, it's difluoroethane) does little to address this.

sure you can be using any profile you want while your plugged in....but I just wanted to point out the possibility.

Also I used to say Li-ion battery's didn't benefit from being removed while on AC power...however after seeing our 800 laptops at worked used daily in docking stations..I can say removing the battery will help extend its life

Thanks for the help. I have removed the battery and while running off the
plug the thing is MUCH hotter then running off the battery,so I will
just use the battery. I understand about he battery cycles but the one I
bought off Amazon was only $21 with delivery so not really a show stopper
for the cost(of replacing a battery every 6 months). Pete

its most likely do to your power saving features..you should be able to change profiles / adjust these settings. (however it wont fix the real problem of your heat sink / fans being clogged)

as mentioned before the not so affective but better then nothing thing you can try to do is dust out the vents...the best thing to do would be open up the machine and dust out the heat sinks/fans

How old is the machine? If you've already replaced the battery I'm betting the heatsink/fan assembly is clogged with dust. If you post the make/model I can probably find you the service manual. You usually only need to remove the keyboard to clean the assembly out.

I saw a utube video to get at the fan and it looked like a nightmare.Getting to the keyboard seemed to take forever on that video.I mean
I do my own car brake work,alternators,water pumps etc,trigger jobs on Colts and S&Ws and I would
not take my laptop apart from that video. Pete

What make/model is it? Often looking at the actual service manual will show you a fast and easy way. Not to mention every screw is labeled in there.

HP G60, this was a handmedown from my 17 year old granddaughter, my
daughter cleaned everything out of it and gave it to me,has worked fine
for almost a year--date on machine says Sept/09. Thanks
