    USB memory security

    I was wondering if there's a way to set up a password on my usb memory. It's a lexmar 8gb 3.0. I really don't keep anything sensative but would like peace of mind in case I ever loose it. Thank guys.

    TrueCrypt is free open-source disk encryption software for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. In case an attacker forces you to reveal the password, TrueCrypt provides plausible deniability. In contrast to file encryption, data encryption performed by TrueCrypt is real-time (on-the-fly), automatic, transparent, needs very little memory, and does not involve temporary unencrypted files.

        ++ on truecrypt
        I truecrypt several of my files on laptop and thumbdrives due to HIPAA reasons. It's not the most intuitive thing to use initially, but you get over that learning curve real quick. As long as you realize you are creating a new "volume", and not just securing the drive per se.

          Passwords are useless if you're not using encryption.

            Can you please elaborate more on encryption. I thought the government and private industry were the only ones that had this type of technology.

                Did you just flat out ignore the first reply you got or something?

                It's free, go read about it and use it.

                  I hope you're not serious.

                    I use truecrypt on both my USB sticks. It's nearly impossible to crack and any layman that gets the drive won't even know there's encrypted partitions on it. Plus, it's free.

                      Passwords are an attempt to control access to a file but the important information may still be stored in a readable form on the media. So if you can access the file in another way, the contents are available to you.

                      Encryption, provided confidentiality so even if the file is accessed, the information is not stored in a useable form unless you have the appropriate password. There are a variety of encryption tools that allow you to encrypt an individual file or entire device/drive.

                      So for devices like USB drives or drives in mobile devices, many people will encrypt the entire drive in case of loss. Truecrypt is a pretty nice solution for many people's needs.

                          One little downside to truecrypt is you partition out that space for your encrypted files. So once you have created that volume, ie 8 gb on a 16 gb drive. That 8gb is now used up, as it is like another partition. You won't be able to expand or shrink it later, so like buying a gun safe, know what size you need, and then double it .

                            Another for truecrypt. It works. It's fast. It's easy. And for the truly paranoid you can download the source code and compile it yourself.

                            I actually trust it more than anything from a large corporation. Who knows what deals they have made with the NSA and CIA.

                              Another +1 for truecrypt. Works great on my flash drives and my laptop.
