    Depending upon how much important/critical data you have may wish to look into one of the cloud backup providers. Many are free up to a certain point then pay for larger needs. Good way to really protect (local + cloud backup) things like financial files & pictures.

      I'm going to be building a NAS out of an old PC to do pretty much what you want to do. I'm going to install FreeNAS (a Linux based OS) which supports ZFS, CIFS/SMB, RAID and web access. Might be worth looking into if all you want to do is have a network accessible storage device rather than a full blown media center.
