For a BEST SHTF charger the ideal option would be multiple solar panels(Maybe 2x 12V 5Amp trickle chargers?)=>12Volt LEAD-ACID battery=> female car-"plugs"(not plug for more than one device)=>regular car adapter all in a sealed Faraday 40mm grenade ammo can that is air-tight too. But that would be for a REAL SHTF due to solar flares, Nuke, or EMP only, and cell towers would be down anyways. (You could have a portable computing device if it were an Android [with a Keyboard] in the same box and had backed-up apps if rooted and backed up the OS on the card, but iPhones would not be able to be factoried, backed-up or restored from the card as you have to activate on a computer [or have a data connection: Cell, or WiFi to activate after factoring when they whack out], and all computers would have taken the EMP-hit too. Androids can be backed-up, and restored all from the card, and no re-activation is needed with custom ROMs).

Unlimited back up power if you have enough eneloop AAs. Make all your BOB/emergency items AA compatible and you'll be set for a long time. The 4 AA charger has USB output and a LED flashlight. It can charge your phone directly from the panel or at night with the 4AAs.

No I have not done so yet... but this is my plan. And they would not be set-up for more than testing because they would be in said metal protective container for when the "Zombies" come...

I have seen similar set-ups, I would probably go with one that would charge more than just AA's if I were to get one of these. Maybe something that would take protected 18650's or something that will charge more than 1000 (Wikipedia says: NiMH=500-1000 charges, but I have gotten less than 150 if they sit and discharge for a while out of rotation [could be because they are old?].) times would be a great design. Now a rotatable set of say 18650's would be able to charge your phone fully, and still have extra for other devices, while another set is still charging.

These would still be a good option (depending on price vs. longevity?) for a temporary solution.

Have you tried low self discharge eneloop AAs? They hold a charge for a long time.

18650s don't fit a lot of things. I have about 2 dozen eneloops and 2 dozen lithium AAs in my kit.

Each eneloop is 2000mah, but I've only charged my iphone up 2x with the Goal Zero kit. Im guessing there is some energy loss when charging 1 battery with another.
