It works but wondering if there's anything better out there.

I'm sure there's manufactured data books out there or programs I just use a lined journal /shrug.

Excel suits my needs and has for years. Customizable when things change, added or deleted.

All my firearms have only 100 rounds down the pipe. No need for a logbook.

Excel is ok but wanted to build more of a database. Microsoft access is what I'll try next.

If you want a real db, download MS SQL Server express or MySQL

A true database is useful for data that changes often. This forum is a great example of such a database. A shooting log will not need such a dB because only the latest few rows will change, while the earlier data should remain unchanged except for correcting an error.

MS Access will serve your need nicely with the added ease of use. The dB operations are done internally so that you don't have to write SQL code or scripts unless you want to. I used it for years. It does have a learning curve, but it is not horrendous. The MS Help files for Access are extensive, and there are other resources on the Web, if you need them. It is worth a look.

Excel is ok for non-relational data. MS Access is relational but has db size limits and is less secure. It's an easy middle ground between Excel and a true DB server.

I seem to recall the Access database limit was 2GB. A quick search revealed...

Microsoft Access databases, whether in the older .mdb format or the modern .accdb format, have a hard limit of 2 GB per database file, which includes all tables, queries, forms, reports, macros, and modules, minus the space required for system objects (Microsoft Support, 2026) Microsoft+2. This limit is not just for raw data; all database objects contribute to the total size, so practical performance issues often appear before reaching the full 2 GB.

If the OP believes his dB file will exceed that limit, then MySQL or PostgreSQL may be a better choice if Excel won't fill the bill.

google sheets here. only so i can update on phone or from another desktop. i keep a notebook/pen with me and than move it over at the google sheets. i do the same what i use ammo and which for what day. so it helps me on my ammo inventory. you can do excel and on cloud too or onedrive but i got this started eons ago so i just keep it there.

I track total rounds cycled through a firearm, the event, date, location and caliber. Also built tables for monthly and YTD totals. Haven't used ms access in decades. Thought it went bye bye.
