New question: On the full retail version of Windows 7 Ultimate it does not say the number of licenses on it. If I do have the retail version can I install it in more than one PC?

No, Microsoft is not that generous.
Per the EULA
OEM - Installed on one machine, can not be moved to another machine. If you sell or throw away the computer, the copy of Windows goes with it. It is bound to that system - Requires Activation
Retail - Can be moved or re-installed on another machine. - Requires Activation
Volume Licence - Purchased typically by business or volume needs. One licence key, no activation required, and be moved or transferred as many times as needed by the end user. Typically min. of 5 licences neen to be purchased. This is also really the only option for people who use VDI / VMWare Virtual Desktop Environments.
Student Licence - Same as OEM, for student use at a discounted price. Typically need a .edu email address from a known University or institution to purchase.
My info might not be 100% accurate. Its been a while since I researched MS licencing rules. There are also some fair usage rules to OEM software.. for example if your motherboard dies and you couldn't find a like for like replacement.Last edited by ExtremeX; 05-29-2012, 9:14 PM.ExtremeXComment

+1, most modern hardware you wont run into any problems... If you cant run Windows 7 x64 on your system, its probably times to upgrade the hardware anyways.
64 bit OS also gives you some additional advantages, the biggest one for me personally is the ability for the system to use more RAM than a 32 bit system. Its not uncommon to see 12+ GB ram in todays desktops.
I can not see any reason to ever go with a 32-bit operation system anymore. If you for some reason have a legacy application which will only run in an older hardware or OS, Windows 7 has XP Mode (w/o the need for VT support on the processor), or you can use a free application from VMWare called VMWare Player to run multiple 32 and 64 bit OS on your system.ExtremeXComment

You can install it on one system. Installing it on more than one will break activation. If you're not going to use BitLocker you should just go with Home Premium Family Pack since that comes with 3 licenses. If you need Ultimate on a system you can always do an anytime upgrade.

You need a 64-bit capable CPU. If your system was made in the last 5 years you should be fine. And Windows 7 comes with 32-bit and 64-bit installation media. I'd just try to install the 64-bit copy first since the disc will not boot if your computer is not 64-bit.
Student is a full retail copy. I think the only difference between the student and retail licenses is that you cannot use student on a work machine. Just like how you cannot use VB.net editions obtained from MSDN-AA to make money.Last edited by JDay; 05-30-2012, 2:53 PM.Oppressors can tyrannize only when they achieve a standing army, an enslaved press, and a disarmed populace. -- James Madison

W8 user interface is built around user interaction on tablets and smartphones.....i know plenty of mouse jockeys dreading the OS. Try 7 for now.

I have four machines running XP which is supported until June 2014, and one Windows 7 machine. It took me about three hours to get Windows 7 Professional 64 bit edition GUI to mimic XP with the desktop schemes, classic start menu and network-activity-indicator icon. Windows 7 isn't bad, but from descriptions of Windows 8 in PC World magazine, I may have to pass or check out Apple. Microsoft has a tradition of silly OS decisions; anyone remember 1995's MS Bob operating system? Scuttlebutt was that Bill Gates wife influenced that abomination. We do not use tablets and smartphones here, so why not a version that supports commercial needs?Last edited by Wrangler John; 06-05-2012, 5:52 PM.Comment

I do remember it, and apparently more clearly than you ... it wasn't an operating system, it was just an add-on for Windows 3.1 and 95, basically a replacement for what used to be the Program Manager environment in 3.1. Melinda Gates was on the marketing team for it. She didn't create it, she just had to try and figure out a way to sell it.NRA Life Member
