Just before the US banned them late last year, a friend of mine brought back one of the latest DJI drones from China. I don't know what the model is, maybe a Neo2 or similar. We went out to dinner last night and she gave me a demo - no controls, just cell phone and hand commands. It was both impressive and concerning. From the instant she turned it on it gave the impression of being a living being, with all the agility, autonomy, and speed of a humming bird. As it wizzed around us at is own direction, a lot of the time i couldn't keep track of just exactly where it was except when it would stop and tell us to pose for a photo. It had no problem following us around (facial recognition) in the dark, dodging trees and obsticles, although the full moon and street lights probably helped.
Although we were having fun with it, the whole time it was giving me very uneasy feelings. It doesn't take much imagination to consider the offensive implications and the weaponized versions that must already exist. Up until last night i had figured some bird shot and a good aim would be sufficient to take these things out.
My friend told me she paid the equivalent of just $200 for it on her China trip.
